Homework
Homework is an important part of your child's school experience.  Homework is given because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility and discipline, and helps students develop positive study habits. It is very important that your child
learns good homework habits early. Your child should be fairly independent in completing their homework, as I go over what
is expected at the end of each day.

Along with the assignments, your first grader should be
engaged in 10-15 minutes of pleasurable reading each day.
This includes your child reading to you, you reading to your child and/or shared reading. This time should also be positive and stress-free.

If a situation occurs where homework can't be turned in, please simply write me a note in your child's agenda and I will be glad to work it out.  Acceptable excuses include illness, family emergency, etc.  Unacceptable excuses include late playtimes and games, unwilling to do homework, friends were over, leaving homework at home, etc.  Please remember that it is the student's responsibility to put homework back in the folder as it is finished, forgotten homework is an unacceptable excuse.

Parents often wonder, "Should I correct my child's mistakes? How will the teacher know he/she is having
a problem?" My advice is, yes, point out the mistakes to your child in a very gentle way, and use that opportunity to reteach and clarify the skill. Please let me know about a particular problem area, always jot a note, or make a little star where your child needed help or a correction was made with your help.
  • Make sure your child has a designated homework area that is well lit and away from distractions.
  • Keep a box with all the supplies that your child may need nearby.  Box should include: pencils, eraser, sharpener, scissors, glue, crayons, color pencils, markers and a ruler.
  • Homework must be done in pencil. Other materials may be used when specified on directions.
  • Try to keep homework time as positive and stress-free as possible.
  • Homework must include your child's name and the date.
  • Please encourage your child to do their homework neatly, as well as completing and double checking his/her work. Remind your child to place it in folder and in backpack.
  • Homework is a 20% of your child's grade.
